Mayan hammocks are comfortable and easy to use
The supportive feeling of the world famous Mayan hammock style is unmatched but keep in mind this style does have different hanging requirements than other hammocks. This can mean that they won't work properly on stands that were designed for rope hammocks. One major benifit of this style is that they can be hung indoors provided you have solid anchor locations about 13 feet apart and 5-6 feet up. With distances greater than 15 feet you can attach a Mayan hammock by hanging it from eyebolts mounted through ceiling joists. Outdoors you could attach two wooden 4x4 posts to the outside of your deck.
The best part of hanging a Mayan hammock this way is that you do not have to worry about storing a bulky hammock stand. You can simply untie one end of your hammock and hang both loops from a wall, creating a practical, useful, work of textile art to enhance your home.
The way the Mayan hammock is hung creates a lower, more stable center of gravity and hence, a more relaxing experience. It is difficult to fall out of a Mayan hammock even if a friend sneaks up to "flip you out"
Very thin to Medium-thin fibers are used to create these hammocks so they are more delicate than other styles. The thinner the fiber the more heavenly the support will be but this also means the fibers are more delicate. You must be careful with your Mayan hammock. When used properly a well-made Mayan hammock can last 20 years. The same hammock might last only one year if left to the elements full time in a harsh location. Most hammocks end up somehwere in between. All agree they are well worth it because of the unmatched cloud-like support.
When working together these small fibers can support large loads but any one fiber can be snapped by rough handling. Synthetics are much stronger but have a bit firmer feel than the organic fibers. Even with synthetics care must be taken not to pull the fiber out of sync with the rest of the weave or it will make a tight spot until you carefully re-weave the fiber back into the web. The smaller sizes (single, twin, queen) are favored for portability and lower cost and still provide solid comfort. They can be stored away in smaller spaces and easily fit into a backpack or with your canoe gear. Imagine how jealous your friends will be when you string up a Mayan hammock in the little grove of trees on your favotiye beach. Better yet if you are backpacking in steep rocky areas why not sleep in your hammock. Swinging gently above the cold rocky ground. You will still need a soft sleeping pad to insulate your exposed underside under the hammock. Makje sure any sharp edges or zippers do not snag the woven area. It's not a big deal to protect your hammock from this type of thing once you start thinking about it.
